VIRTUAL SYMPOSIUM: FINDING COMFORT/DISCOMFORT THRUGH FOODWAYS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC Sept. 23 2020, 2:00-3:30 pm (EST)
CENTER FOR FOOD AND CULTURE, BOWLING GREEN, OHIO, USA
The Center for Food and Culture is hosting a virtual symposium to present an oral history project documenting ways in which people are finding both comfort and discomfort through food and foodways activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Virtual interviews explored individuals’ experiences during this time, and excerpts from interviews can be viewed at the online interactive exhibit (https://comfortfoodwaysexhibit.wordpress.com). The research team will discuss some of these stories, looking at how they point to larger issues in our culture and the current food system but also offer strategies for social connection, personal solace, and hope for a better future.
The free symposium will be held Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2020 (EST) from 2:00-3:30 pm. More information and registration will be posted on the website of the Center for Food and Culture (www.foodandculture.org). Participants are invited to contribute questions and comments as well as photographs of their own comfort foods. The symposium will be recorded and available for future viewing. Project materials are available for classroom use and for anyone interested in contributing their own stories.
The symposium and project received partial support from the Association for the Study of Food and Society (ASFS). The program is made possible, in part, by Ohio Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this (publication) (program) (exhibition) (website) do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
